it could be done now if Pig Oil and car makers would not be so opposed to change.

And in 2026 when you go to get your great fuel efficient vehicle repaired... when you see the bill, you will stutter... "but I thought I was supposed to save money with this gas sipping vehicle!!!"

They should require cars to get better gas mileage.

Again, its Obama forcing his socialist European agenda on all of us. He wants the government to determine our driving and buying behavior; and if he can't get it done by legislation, he'll try to do it by executive order. Doesn't this remind anyone of a dictator?

If you get twice the mileage gas costs half as much. We already know what some of these cars will look like as some are here now.

I think its crazy to be tightening them now (it is tightening, right???...lose track of latest targets quickly) but remember this isn't as far fetched as some think like some saying at this rate take 2050 to reach this. Remember a) its based on old mpg testing methods that are 20% higher than what's used now b) there will be credits for technology to boost it & c) loopholes will abound, just like the current one of make gas-hungry vehicles flex fuel (no one can consistently use E80) & it won't count against your CAFE avgs.

In the 70s, market forces forced better gas mileage. Too bad know-it-alls in Washington cannot let people decide for themselves which is more important, mileage or safety.

Many cars can get 50mph. now,we need to get a higher fleet avg. This will be good for all of us using less fuel used and more money in your pocket. If you want to pay out a hundred bucks every time you fill up good luck with that, fuel is not going to get a lot cheaper, no matter who is in the White House.

What are they worried about? 2025 is a long way off. They can either make the cars do it or they can lobby the next couple presidents to change the rules. No big deal.

If the car companies don't like I'm sure the gas companies hate it and will invest millions to derail it.

Just like congress will have to have a balanced budget by 2016. It will never happen. Mandate something far enough in the future so you wont be around to worry about it. Leave it to the next people in line to take care of it. Ain't America wonderful.

ag9495, very well put. Thanks to vehicles that deliver high mpg (including hybrids, EVs, etc.), the gas tax dollars going to the feds & state govts have been declining. The politicians WILL find ways to make up that "shortfall", rather than cut their own wasteful spending. In short, we'll be paying, no matter what!

Good initiative. Gas will likely be $10.00 a gallon or more by then. A solution to higher pump prices is better mileage so you can drive a given distance without spending more per trip.

mberg, more than likely, the cost to get to the new CAFE standards will be higher that the cost savings from using less fuel. The rate at which gas prices have been going up the last 4 years, I don't even want to think about how much it will be in 2025. If these rules ever do make it to law, then the gas savings will probably never make up the extra cost that we will be paying for a new car.
Another issue to think about...we'll be buying less gas which means less taxes to the government, but they still wants our money, so we will be paying mileage taxes or something along those lines. The cost to drive in 20-30 years will be astronomical!

Evidence of leadership. The higher mpg figures are a great way to lower our costs for driving our cars. If you are against higher mileage, there are probably a few 1970-era clunkers you could probably find on used car lots.
