Dodge exits NASCAR for 2013

The Seattle Times -- DETROIT — Dodge has decided to drop out of NASCAR racing at the end of this season, making it the only domestic automaker without a presence in America's most popular motor sport, said Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of Chrysler's SRT Motorsports brand.

"We feel the pain," Gilles said, noting that comments on Twitter and other social-media outlets have exploded with commentary about Dodge's involvement with NASCAR.

It's particularly difficult because Dodge has billed itself as the performance brand within Chrysler.

NASCAR fans are notoriously loyal to the brands of their favorite drivers, and the spending by corporate sponsors makes it a very attractive marketing opportunity for a domestic automaker.

pretty poor excuse to stop racing. would like to see dodge get back to it's domination that it had years ago

Penske seldom won a race anyway. Toyota and Chevy usually has better finishers with Ford a distant 3rd.

Guess they couldn't convince Sergio Marchionne of the value of doing NASCAR racing.

Anyway, there's only two domestic automakers left: Ford and Government Motors. Chrysler is as American as fettuccine.

It's just a label on a custom made, sheet metal covered roll bar cage. Who cares if it says Dodge or Yugo on the outside? Racing fans are dolts if they think those cars are actally Dodge Chargers or Challengers.

Part of the reason for the low attendence is that the core fans not only no longer can afford to go to the races, a lot of them are out of work.
