Canada Spends Big to Save GM, So Why Not Mexico?

TIME -- At time when the U.S. and Canada are pouring tens of billions of dollars into General Motors Corp. to give the bankrupt automaker a new lease on life, why is Mexico flying under the radar?

Last month when Washington and Ottawa pledged to invest $60 billion in Detroit's biggest car company, Mexico — a partner in NAFTA and an integrated North-American auto industry — was conspicuous by its absence at the negotiating table.

That's more than a little surprising when you consider that Mexico has overtaken Canada in production of GM vehicles, making such popular name plates as the Chevy Silverado and Suburban. Last year GM made a total of 504,858 vehicles at four assembly plants in Mexico; that's 9% higher than the 463,869 cars and light trucks produced by GM Canada.

You can thank the greedy unions for driving wages so high and thus the operating costs in Canada and the US of A.

The article poses a very fair question. And while they're at it why not ask if they're planning to fund welfare programs for their citizens rather than expecting neighbor countries to assume that burden?

Mexico seems to want the US to fund their needs. Why would they pitch in even if it makes business sense?

Low to no union costs are the reason. GM Mexico is in the black. You don't need a bailout if your are profitable.

Their should be a penalty for Mexico, but they know that it is cheaper for GM to build in Mexico and Obama will take care of bailing GM out.

All the American car companies have plants in Mexico (including Ford). With UAW wages so high, it makes more and more economic sense to use Mexico for much of their manufacturing.

If Mexico doesn't chip in then Canada should put a high sales tax on the Chevy Silverado and Suburban, and any other GM vehicle that isn't made in Canada.

I wasn't asked if I was in favour of giving GM any of my tax money.

If I had my say I would have said to let GM either sink or get out of this mess all by themselves.

The Canadian taxpayer didn't get GM into the mess they are in, and the Canadian taxpayer shouldn't have to rescue GM.

HATE TO SAY IT. But why should they. The auto maker is happy to build cars there with low wages, minimal regulations, no employee benefits and no penalty to bring products north of the border. So the country has no need to do more.

Mexico will suffer again. They are trying to undercut Canada and the US and take industry for cheap wages. It will backfire.

Great. (Why would Mexico want to pay for anything when the American tax payer can cover it for them whether we (the American Tax payer) want to or not.)

Mexico dumps all of its problems on the Us and never does a think to help us or anyone else.

isn't it interesting we are supporting so many of their citizens and all we have is talk about this and things never change.
