Isn't the Department of Energy's mandate to become energy independent?
Big Oil (mostly smaller outfits in N.D.) : doing the job Chu won't do.

BAKKEN IS BOOMING, Good for North Dakota – crude oil and natural gas production. But the winters there are brutal and can be very very cold. BUT, Big Oil and Big Gas continues to sell fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices, there will be NO price reduction for the cost of fuel or natural gas IN the US. 'Coming out of the closet' Sneeky's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the jobs are Not here, the economy is so anemic. Sneeky's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continue to be down! People will still drive and buy fuel no matter what but it sure helps to have a job too! The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Speculators, manipulators and the banks continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump for their personal greedy benefit. The price at the pump needs to go down to $2/gallon, *$3, *$3.50/gallon or *$4.00 is Not the new low! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

From what I have heard, our domestic oil from private or federal land can't be exported. However, the oil from deep Gulf waters and off shore can and is exported. Big Oil claimed years ago the cost of drilling was so expensive they shouldnt have to pay our government for it. They were let off the hook and still get it free. Since oil may have been under $30 a barrel when the government let them off the hook, oil prices have certainly changed the equasion now. In my opinion they still get too many subsidies and tax breaks and love drilling off shore for profits. A government share of this oil should be negociated.

Good for them. It will not lower anyone's gas prices in the U.S. though.

More oil to export to China and Asia. Note, US prices aren't going to drop much with this added supply.

Don't empty it all at once, it takes many thousands of years to replenish those oil fields.

That Bakken place is also out producing my back yard where production hasn't increased a single barrel in the 43 years I've been paying the taxes on it. If things don't improve soon I'm out of here.

have you heard that California has the largest oil reserve in the US? Enough to supply America's oil needs for 100 years. So why aren't we drilling for the oil? Problem? You have to use frakking to get to the oil. While some form of fakking is used in North Dakota, there's strong resistance to use frakking to get to the oil in California Given California is near broke, it will be interesting to see how long will the environmentalists to continually win out over the oil companies

@PissedAtthePump - The way I understand it is that those are NOT Federal lands so the Obama administration has no control over the land leases like the do in ANWAR and the gulf, all federal control.

All this energy production has really been kept under the radar. Report yesterday said the U.S. is on pace to equal the oil production of Saudi Arabia by the end of next year! (11 mil Brls/Day) All this production on Obama's watch! What gives? His administration must have been keeping all this drilling quiet so as to not rile up the eco-dems, with the unintended consequence of giving Romney the chance to take credit for it all by saying "If elected I'd expand energy production" and Bang! there it is on day one. (okay call me a cynic, but politicians are lying only when their lips are moving)
