85-Octane Gas Sold In SD

KDLT News -- 85-octane gas can be distributed to gas stations in South Dakota starting Monday.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard instructed the state Department of Public Safety to implement emergency rules governing the sale of the lower grade gasoline. Oil companies and distributors say there could be possible fuel shortages if they are not allowed to sell 85-octane gasoline in South Dakota.

It has been sold in the Black Hills for many years; because lower octane gas won’t pre-detonate as easily at higher elevations.

The octane rating tells us how high the ignition point of gasoline is. You might look at it this way--the higher the number, the more stable the ignition. Lower octane gas ignites easier, which means it can cause early misfires in your car engine. If there are enough of these mistimed explosions,

One can bet the push for ultrea low octane fuel is tied directly to SD ethanol plants & corn producers. By making pure gasoline lower in octane, fuel suppliers will HAVE to blend corn based ethanol in the junk 85 octane gasoline just to get it up to 87 octane. This will in turn make consumers dependent on the ehanol laced mileage robbing E10 & one can bet soon to be forced on consumers... E15. With numerous ethanol plants having been closed in the last few weeks, all this directive will do position SD's pure gaoline at a point that ethanol has to be added to it, keeping the entire corrupt process going. SD's corn farmers & ethanol producers can continue rubbing their greedy palms. Heres some info straight from SD's agriculture website http://www.nasda.org/cms/7195/8617/8835.aspx "South Dakota’s main crops are corn, soybeans, wheat and hay. Roughly 40 percent of the corn produced in South Dakota goes towards ethanol production. There are 15 ethanol plants in the state, which produce almost 1 billion gallons per year, which is 10% of the nation’s ethanol supply. South Dakota has the nation’s highest number of farmer-owned plants and is fourth in total ethanol production." That's where the emergency is, not possible fuel shortages of decent octane pure gasoline, the gasoline refined & sold to South Dakota consumers could easily & should be 87 octane MINIMUM pure gasoline! Problem is when your traveling and have it in your tank and come down into the lower altitudes motor starts to ping especially if your working the motor hard. 85 octane is readily available on the wholesale market it's what they add 10% ethanaol to, to get 87 octane oxygenated. AS ethanol increases octane they add it to the 87 to get midgrade and so on... Newer cars require higher octane due to higher compression so 85 will not cut the mustard out on the plains so if you find yourself with an engine knock due to low octane gas you have to get premium gas ASAP or you could throw in a couple gallons of E-85 even if your car isn't flex fuel to cure the knock. I've done it, it works.
