Consider that in 1 second at 60 mph, you travel 88 feet. Reaction time is 1 second and an additional second to pick your foot up and put it on the brake pedal and you will have traveled 176 feet. If you're following a vehicle at 100 feet, by the time you have stopped your vehicle, you will be 76 feet beyond the rear bumper of the vehicle ahead of you.
Practice the 2 second rule during daytime and at least 3 seconds during night and bad visibility.
